Excursion to the ice holes
Surprising high-Alpine vegetation awaits you near Eppan. If you’d like to see it with your own eyes, walk to the ice holes at the bottom of Mt Ganda/Gand. As you may have guessed from the name, a cold breeze blows from the loose layers of porphyry rock in this area, which allows plants to grow here at around 500 metres above sea level that are usually only found in high-Alpine regions, starting from around 1,200 metres above sea level. The ice holes are a system of cracks between the porphyry blocks that provide refreshing coolness thanks to a continuous flow of air – especially pleasant on hot summer days.
