Holidays in and around Eppan: incredibly varied

Girlan, the oldest wine village in South Tyrol, is located slightly higher than its neighbours, at 435m above sea level, which means the sun shines longer here. The many wine-growers are especially happy about this, as the sun-ripened grapes let them produce especially fine wines – which is why the village boasts the highest concentration of wineries. During numerous events, such as the legendary Cellar Festival that takes place every four years, you have the opportunity to discover the impressive variety of underground wine cellars. The sheer number of wine-related events that take place throughout the year tells you what a significant role this exquisite drink plays in Girlan.

Eppan, South Tyrol’s sixth-largest municipality, is home to some 9,000 inhabitants across the eight picturesque villages of Girlan, St. Pauls, Missian, Perdonig, Gaid, Frangart, Montiggl, and Unterrain, each a charming, unique gem. The surrounding area has one of the highest concentrations of castles in Europe and features more than 200 cultural and historical attractions, including fortresses, castles, churches, and chapels. Wine-growing also plays a central role here. The region is particularly well known for its outstanding Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, and Lagrein, which flourish in the hilly vineyards around Eppan.

The provincial capital of South Tyrol is only around 7 kilometres away from Girlanerhof and is absolutely worth a visit. Nowhere else do Mediterranean and Alpine lifestyles or traditional and modern influences intertwine so harmoniously. A walk through the picturesque old town with its traditional fruit market is highly recommended, as is a shopping tour in the elegant boutiques. An Italian “trattoria” or rustic Tyrolean guesthouse are ideal places to take a well-deserved break and sample the delicious specialities of Italian and South Tyrolean cuisine.
